Gay inmate pen pals

I spilled hot coffee all over Cole that day at the downtown coffee shop, mortified because I knew instantly he was devastatingly cute and, even more embarrassingly, because he was wearing a Proud to be Gay t-shirt. We became fast friends after that, bonding over our shared experiences in the LGBT community, and trading flirty texts that made my heart race despite the miles separating us while he finished his last year of college. Now he's back, though, and I'm pretty sure this time, it'll be more than just coffee we're sharing.

How to Find an

  • Our mission is to give inmates a sense of hopefulness by connecting them to people on the “outside world.” Those from all walks of life have committed to our pen-pal service to communicate with inmates and have formed nurturing and unconditional friendships. Each issue is full of pieces submitted by our incarcerated members; relevant news, history, and opinions from our non-incarcerated community; and reflections from our national Executive Director. We include a calendar so that people in solitary confinement can keep track of which day it is.

We ask both ‘free world’ and incarcerated penpals to stick to writing through our online correspondence system for the first 6-month commitment, as this allows a rapport to build up while best positioning us to offer support if any issues arise at the outset.
